Periodontal disease is the leading cause of tooth loss. It is a disease, if not maintained, progresses and contributes to deteriorating oral and overall health. Periodontal disease has been linked to: heart disease, stroke, diabetes and several other serious illnesses.

The doctor and team at Periodontal Specialists of Vinings are experts at providing gentle and thorough care for patients with periodontal disease.

Periodontitis (gum disease / periodontal disease) strikes almost half of all adult Americans. It is one of the most common conditions in our population.

Periodontal disease is caused by plaque and bacteria that forms around the gumline and creates pockets between the teeth and gums. Over time, pockets deepen and removing plaque requires a deep cleaning.

Periodontitis can often not be completely reversed, but proper at-home care combined with in-office maintenance can prevent the disease from progressing and will keep the harmful bacteria at bay.

Symptoms of periodontal disease include:

  • Sore Gums
  • Bleeding while brushing or flossing
  • Loose teeth
  • Halitosis (bad breath)

WHAT IS A PERIODONTIST?

Many dentists treat gum disease, but are not able to eliminate the gum pockets caused by the disease. In this instance, they will usually refer you to a periodontist.  A periodontist is a dental specialist with years of extra training to be an expert in managing even the most difficult cases of gum disease.
